WHY BIRDS ARE A PEST

One of the key reasons that birds are a pest is that they can carry a number of diseases which can be harmful to both humans and pets. There are more than 60 diseases which pigeons, starlings, sparrows and geese can transmit to humans, so as wonderful as it is to see birds flying around, there is a reason why councils and businesses put up signs asking you not to feed the birds.

Birds' faeces in particular can lead to serious, sometimes deadly diseases, for example:

  • Candidasis – this disease is spread by pigeons, affecting many parts of the body, and is a growing problem for women, causing painful itching and discharge from the vagina. It is a yeast or fungal infection, and can also affect the skin, mouth and respiratory system.
  • St. Louis Encephalitis – caused by mosquitoes which have fed on infected pigeons, sparrows and finches. It can be fatal to elderly people, and can also result in paralysis or coma. It is an inflammation of the nervous system.

Pigeon netting and bird netting is a must considering they can also be carriers to around 50 different bugs and insects, such as fleas, ticks, mites and lice, which can be a problem for both humans and pets. One of the most notable of these is the bed bug, which has been in the news recently for causing infestations in some parts of the USA. Therefore if you have a problem with birds, they might not be the only pest you find you have a problem with.

Birds can be a particular health problem if they get into water sources or air conditioning systems. For example, a dead bird in the water tank in an attic could be a major health problem to a family. However, disease can be spread more subtly as well, for example bird faeces (guano) drying and thus becoming dust, getting into water supplies and air vents.

Bird droppings are also acidic, often causing great damage to buildings, statues, and in particular the paint on cars. Floors with lots of bird droppings on can also be dangerous when wet, as they become incredibly slippery.

Birds may also cause pipes and gutters to be blocked through nest building, depositing of debris or through bird droppings. This can subsequently lead to damage of your property, particularly walls and roofs through water not being able to drain away properly.

Finally, birds nesting in your roof can be extremely noisy as well as destructive, being particularly annoying at night when you are trying to sleep, or early in the morning, either through the noise they make moving around, or through calling.
