WHY BIRDS ARE A PEST

Bird control is sought by some because bird droppings can lead to serious, sometimes fatal diseases. Examples include:

• Salmonellosis – food poisoning caused by bird droppings, which can become dust and get sucked into air conditioning systems and ventilators, contaminating kitchens, restaurants and other food preparation areas with dangerous bacteria.
• Histoplasmosis – a fungus in dried bird droppings can leading to this potentially fatal respiratory disease.
• E.coli – people don't like flies because they eat dung and thus spread disease, but birds do the same, pecking at cow manure. Cows carry E.coli, and thus so can bird droppings. If these get into the water or food supply it can have lethal consequences.

Bird droppings can also be corrosive, causing damage to buildings and in particular the paint on cars making pigeon pest control and bird control necessary. Floors with a large amount of bird droppings on can also be dangerous when wet, as they become incredibly slippery.

Birds can also be carriers to around 50 different bugs and insects, including various mites, fleas, ticks and lice, which can cause harm or spread disease to humans and pets. One of the notable bugs that they carry is the bed bug. These are carried by pigeons, starlings and house sparrows. They take up to five times their own body weight in blood, and their hosts include humans and pets.

Birds can be a particular health problem if they get into water sources or air conditioning systems. For example, a dead pigeon in the water tank in the loft could be a major health problem to a family.

Birds may also cause pipes and gutters to be blocked through nest building, depositing of debris or through bird droppings. This can subsequently lead to damage of your property, particularly walls and roofs.

Finally, there is the simple matter of birds nesting in your roof can be very noisy and destructive, and thus can be quite a disturbance. They can be particularly annoying at night when you are trying to sleep, or early in the morning, either through the noise they make moving around, or through calling.
